PREDICTIVE MODELING OF GAS PIPELINES LIFETIME UNDER MECHANOCHEMICAL CORROSION

 

Background

Gas pipelines’ wall thinning due to corrosion increases the hoop tensile stresses. According to the mechanochemical corrosion theory these stresses increase the corrosion rate and decrease the wall thickness. As a result, corrosion rate is not uniform and gas pipelines’ lifetime is overestimated.

Aims and Objectives

To assess the gas pipelines’ lifetime accounting the influence of the hoop tensile stress in the pipe wall on the corrosion rate.

Results

The analytical equation for predictive modeling of gas pipelines’ lifetime under mechanochemical corrosion is derived. It is shown that remaining stresses reduces the real lifetime.
